You changed the password. Your camera’s still exposed.

Changing the password on a new camera is the right move. Most people stop there, and on a cheap cloud camera that leaves the biggest hole wide open. The weak spot isn’t the password. It’s the cloud connection itself.

Three holes a password doesn’t close

  • Your footage leaves home. The moment the camera talks to its cloud, video goes to the maker’s servers, often on the other side of the world. You’re now trusting whoever runs them, and cheap brands have a poor track record.
  • Hidden accounts under your lock. Many budget cameras ship with accounts built into the firmware that sit underneath the password you set. They rarely get security updates, so those accounts stay there.
  • The “watch from anywhere” tunnel. That always-on remote feature has been scanned in bulk before. Thousands of cameras were opened at once, and the owner’s password never came into it.

The fix

  • Cut the camera off from the cloud. Block it from the internet at the router, or pick a camera that works without the maker’s app.
  • Record at home. Footage goes to a small recorder on your own network, not someone else’s server.
  • Reach it only through your own private connection. When you’re away, you connect back to your own network. No open ports, no public link.
  • Still change the password. It matters. It just isn’t the whole job.

That’s how we run ours: every camera records to a box in the house, none of them talk to a cloud, and we reach them through our own private link. Your feed, your box, nobody else’s.
